Valentine Gifts

Valentine Gifts, originally uploaded by A!ison.

When I was a child I loved Valentine's Day. I couldn't wait for my mom to buy me a pack of Valentine's. I'd open the box and separate the best ones from the good ones to the bad ones then I'd start with best and give them to the cutest boy and my bff. The kids I didn't like always got the worst ones.

On the day of Valentine's it was customary to decorate a lunch sack or something similar and then hang it off the back of your chair. When it was time, everyone would go around and drop their Valentine's into the paper sacks.

I LOVED opening every single card. I would take my time with each one. I would open them as if they had a golden ticket inside, the golden ticket actually being the boy I thought was the cutest. I would analyze his signature till Easter. And then you'd get the random "Love, insert boys name" and you'd wonder "Does he like me? He wrote love." Ah, the simple life.

Then I got bigger and Valentine's Day turned into a day that reminded me at times in my life how incredibly lonely I was. I remember feeling like I was the only single person on earth and for a long time loathed the coming of Valentine's Day.

But then I got even bigger and got married and didn't carry the anxiety of singleness (just exchanged it for childless). It's a fun "holiday" without the obligation and extravagance of Christmas. There's an element of surprise too. Christmastime you know a gift is coming your way. And you don't have to go all out, a simple card in the mail will brighten someone's day!

So today I baked all in the name of love.

1 Peter 4:8 says:
Above all, love each other deeply because love covers over a multitude of sins.
