Baja vs. Cuban

Baja vs. Cuban, originally uploaded by A!ison.

I am a Heinz 57 but after today I'm thinking my latin/puerto rican/hispanic/cuban descent is tipping the scales.

I LOVE Baja Mexican food. I could eat it all day long and never grow tired of it. The SSM always teases me saying I must be half hispanic with how much I have consumed within my lifetime. I would agree.

I LOVE salsa music. Well, I had to google the difference between salsa and meringue and couldn't figure it out which doesn't matter anyway 'cause I love it all. One of my favorite songs (I can sing the entire song phonetically) is Pintame by Elvis Crespo. Today I heard this song in the restaurant bathroom and wanted to bust a move right there in the stall.

Well now I LOVE cuban food. After we returned the rental car, we figured we had driven this far, we might as well drive to Downtown Disney and have an early dinner. We decided on Bongos Cuban Cafe. We started out with Papas Rellenas which was this fried mashed potato stuffed with spicy ground beef. Normally I would not care for something like this but it was delicious. For an entree I had fish with white rice and maduros which is the fried plantains. My husband had the Masitas de Puerco which was similar to Carnitas. He had this delicious black bean and rice with a side of maduros as well. I'm HOOKED on plantains.

I have to say though, I was at the store the other day and found myself surrounded by cuban/hispanics (I know that is not correct but I don't know the right way to say it). There was a part of me that smiled because it was just like being at home. But then they spoke Spanish and the dialect was all wrong and I knew without a doubt I was not home. It comforted me and made me sad all at the same time.

Thank you THANK YOU again for the outpouring of comments you leave here. They are making this transition SO MUCH EASIER.

OMG I *love* cuban food. I think it is because I love time you come back I'm taking you two to Andres restaurant! I think the reason why I love black beans in my mexican food is b/c before I moved to San Diego, I had more cuban food than mexican...totally the truth!

Peruvian food is also excellent. I'm not sure how prevalent it is in Florida, but we did find a restaurant in Miami a few years back when we were at a conference there.

You and my son-in-law look so happy and that makes me happy. I miss you terrible. I spoke to your Auntie today and she knew all about plantains and she told me that she was looking forward to cooking them with you. I hope you enjoyed your first day with your other half today. I'm sure you go lots done. Love you lots.

ok...what is the difference between Florida Spanish and San Diego Spanish???? one a Cuban dialect and one a Mexican? I just figured it was all the same so what do I know.

Am curious now about plantains....need to look them up and see what they are and how to fix them. When you make something with them, post your recipe. Vic
