Farmers Market

Farmers Market, originally uploaded by A!ison.

My day started at 8AM which is early for this Trophy Wife. Decided to visit the Farmers Market and knew I needed to get there early if I wanted anything good. The Greek stayed home again with the babies so his wife and I could have an uninterrupted morning of getting the shopping done.

I’ve come to realize two things since moving here to Florida. One, the produce in the grocery store is of poor selection and expensive. And two, I have watched the movie Food, Inc. and it has caused me to re-think the way I buy food.

If I lived in San Diego and saw Food, Inc., I think it would have difficult for me to make a healthier change because let’s face it, healthier is not cheaper. But here in Florida, the difference between organic and regular is not that much. Even the bad stuff is expensive!

So I have vowed to:

Support the local farmers by purchasing locally grown produce,
Choose foods
that are season and
Buy organic when I can.

It’s not going to be easy. I have the same foods I buy over and over and I’m really going to have to force myself to make those changes. The produce will be easy, it’s the grass-fed meat and dairy, canned goods and frozen foods that will be hard. But I’m proud to say that today my grocery cart was filled with a step in the right direction.

Like one farmer said, if the demand is great, the industry will change. Even WalMart has begun to offer organic choices. Plus, if the cigarette industry can be brought to it’s knees, no doubt so can the food of America.
